Your favourite football columnist / broadcaster
For me it's Gregor Robertson. Had an average career as a pro footballer (for which he left school at about 15) but now he's a staff member on The Times and Times Radio. Unlike most ex-pros he doesn't use cliches and is witty, articulate and realistic. What a difference from all those ex-players wheeled out as pundits who (with some exceptions, maybe Shearer and Ian Wright) have little insight and no originality.

For enthusiasm and surprising intelligence - Joe Cole

For honesty and speaking as he finds - Danny Murphy.

For speaking uncomfortable truth - Simon Jordan

The rest are all equally mediocre. And the second two in my list have their faults.

I have to respect Roy Keanes ability to suck all the hype and joy out of the pundit box to just leave the football.

Like a miserable grey old Dementor.

Pat Nevin

Knowledgable, witty in a dry way and never one-eyed even when commentating on Chelsea.
It helps that he has a hinterland (music and art) that means far more to him than football ever did.

He was great.
Remember him assessing a young Harry Kane...
"It is difficult. Most of the time time he looks like no sort of footballer at all but, my golly, this kid can score goals."

Armfield was also a superb right back for England and mznaged Leeds to a European Cup final where they were robbed in a 2 nil defeat to Bayern!

Think Gabbidon's underrated.

Seems to have been sidelined into commenting on Welsh football.

I always liked Hugh McIlvanney. He was a lot more honest than the tossers around these days. Especially the rash of ex Tottenham players who seem over sympathetic to Levy and who are always encouraging our better players to move on.
